The Silk Road, which once prospered as an east-west transportation route,
As the name implies, it is a magnificent trade route that extends from China, where silk is produced, to Rome.
The world has been enriched by the passage of not only cultural objects but also cultures such as information and scholarship, and people.
This exhibition is under the supervision of Professor Sakuji Yoshimura and with the cooperation of the Hirayama Ikuo Museum of Art.
Introducing about 100 works of the late painter Hirayama and selected treasures from Mr. Hirayama's collection.




Paintings, Buddhist statues, accessories, etc. from the Hirayama Ikuo Museum of Art are exhibited in one place!

A series of works can be called the culmination of Silk Road paintings.
The series contrasts morning and night, sun and moon, and east and west.
The caravan travels from China to Central Asia, India, the Middle East, West Asia, and Rome, from east to west, and from west to east.

King Khufu First Sun Ship

2613-2494 BC Fourth Dynasty of Egypt

The world's oldest wooden ship with a total length of about 42 m. King Khufu's ship is said to have been built for the Pharaoh of the Fourth Dynasty of Egypt and the Old Kingdom.

Red-figure horse-shaped Rhyton

Late 4th century BC Classic era

Rhyton is an elaborately shaped horse head. It is a sake set for festivals where a wine comes out from the spout at the tip. The cup on the horse's head depicts a woman holding a large plate for ceremonies.

Demeter is the Greek Mother of Earth, the goddess of fertility that controls the growth and regeneration of grains. She wears a cylindrical hat and ties it up with a ribbon on her graceful, wavy hair. It was made in Sicily, where there was a Greek colonial city at the time.



West Asia

In Persia during the Seljuk dynasty, east-west trade became active, and Islamic pottery reached its peak under the influence of China. Saveh, the ancient capital of central Iran, is one of the centers of pottery, and many excellent luster pottery that emits rainbow-colored brilliance were made.

Palmyra, a city in the Syrian desert, was a caravan city that prospered through intermediary trade between the Roman Empire and the Parthian Empire in the east. A tomb built by a wealthy citizen on the outskirts of the city had a space on the shelf to store the body and adorned a portrait sculpture of the deceased. The dressed-up portrait reflects the ideal appearance of the deceased's day.



Central Asia

Buddha sitting statue

2-3rd century Pakistan, Gandhara

The whole is covered with white limestone, but the Buddha sitting statue with a gentle expression. The large cloth is worn over the shoulder, the lost right hand is probably tied with an abhayamudra, and the left hand is holding the edge of the cloth. There are lions on both ends of the pedestal on which the Buddha sits, and the fire platform and donors are engraved on the front.

A statuette of a golden deer inlaid with turquoise. It shows a style very close to the golden products found in large numbers in the tombs of the nomadic tribes of Bactrian, Tilia and Tepe.



East Asia

A large jug that is said to have been made in Central Asia in the eastern part of the Iranian Plateau. The shape of the vessel is derived from a Persian metal vessel, and the body represents a bird surrounded by renju. The background is plated and the bird's neck is wrapped with a large ribbon to show auspiciousness. Behind the ostrich-like head, a halo like a Buddha statue is shown, suggesting that this bird is holy.

Women's

8th century Tang dynasty

A female maiden who shows a graceful standing figure. She wears loose clothing, hides her hands in her sleeves, puts them together in front of her chest, and smiles quietly. The plump face with rich flesh and called cheeks was considered to be a woman's ideal during the Tang Dynasty.

Xuanzang statue

Xuanzang is a Chinese Tang priest known for his quest to India through the South Tianshan Road. After studying at his hometown of Nalanda, he returned to Japan with 657 copies of the scriptures in 645, and translated 1335 volumes of Buddhist scriptures such as "Daiwakakei" until his death at the age of 62. This statue, which was created based on the "Xuanzang statue" in the silk book image, shows Sorin's commitment everywhere, such as the wooden carvings of the shades and bamboo bamboo braids that were assembled in Amiyo.

Eleven-faced Senju Kannon statue

A one-fifth prototype of the eleven-faced Senju Kannon statue, which is one length and six shaku, placed at Natadera Temple in Komatsu City, Ishikawa Prefecture. The eleven-faced Buddha above the head has one side of the dvesha side and one side of the upper surface of the white fangs behind the ears, and a mirror is fitted in the center of the halo so that the Buddha of the back of the head can also be worshiped diagonally. , The seed characters that cover the Buddha are arranged around it.



Ikuo Hirayama

Graduated from the Department of Japanese Painting at Tokyo University of the Arts (currently Tokyo University of the Arts) and studied under Seison Maeda. In addition to masterpieces with the theme of Buddhism, he draws a magnificent and fantastic Silk Road, leaving a large footprint on the postwar Japanese painting stage. In addition, he actively contributed to society such as cultural property protection activities, served as the president of Tokyo University of the Arts and a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador, and received the Order of Culture.


Sakuji Yoshimura

President of Higashi Nippon International University, Professor Emeritus of Waseda University (Doctor of Engineering). Organized the first Egyptian expedition in Asia and continued excavation for about half a century. He has achieved many worldwide achievements and is still conducting exploration of King Kufu's tomb using GPR and drones. His research themes range from Egyptian ancient studies to comparative civilization, Japanese festivals, and e-learning education.


Matsuhisa Sohrin

Produced the statues of Jouroku Buddha at Shitennoji Temple in Osaka, Gochi Nyorai statue at the east tower of Enryakuji Temple, and the Five Great Myo King statues at Naritasan Shinshoji Temple in Chiba Prefecture. He also established the Religious Arts Institute to promote the production of Buddhist statues.
